Would you rather work for a great boss who paid you minimum wage or would you rather work for a miserable boss who paid you $100 per hour?

In a seminar I was presenting the thought occurred to me to ask this question. Would you rather work for a great boss who paid you minimum wage or would you rather work for a miserable boss who paid you $100 per hour?

The overwhelming majority of hands raised said that they would rather work for a great boss. Of course this is unscientific study but it points out an important fact. People would rather work for a boss who treated them well and give up some money rather than being miserable at work all day long.

Wow, I was stunned. Who would’ve thought that was the result of a simple question asked in a seminar with hundreds of employees from multiple employers.

A bad boss can hurt your heart, a study published in The Boston Globe November 30, 2008 reports.

Sick and tired of your lousy boss? It’s more than a mere irritation. It could kill you.

Swedish researchers report that workers saddled for four years with managers who were inconsiderate, opaque, uncommunicative, and poor advocates were about 60 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack or other life-threatening cardiac condition. By contrast, employees whose managers exhibited robust leadership skills were roughly 40 percent less likely to suffer heart emergencies.

The result: a bad boss can kill.
